In our challenging world most of us long to be stable individuals with calm and steady temperaments – not excitable people who easily get pulled into pressure, stress, or anxiety, and react irrationally. Yet even our best intentions to walk in stability can come to a screeching halt when adversity burst upon our lives, our buttons get hit- and we negatively act out our impatience, anger, hurt or fear.
God’s word gives us the plan we need to be successful in maturing into stable children of God. He tells us to “dwell in the secret place of the Most High”. This means to reside or live in a necessary, dependent, personal, ongoing union and relationship with the Most High. The secret place is a spiritual home for our hearts, a place where we are loved, understood and accepted by Christ, in spite of our failures. A place that we can go to pull away from the many pressures of family, work, financial problems, etc., and be re-charged by the power of the loving, powerful Holy Spirit of God. In the solitude of the secret place we can find refreshment, and grace to help in our times of need. God promises that, as we learn to progressively dwell in the secret place with Him, we “shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty”. In this secret place God’s powerful healing and unconditional love covers us, despite any adversity, defeat, or enemy that attempts to pull us toward instability.
When adversity arrives- and we blow it by getting pulled into the moment, and reacting- we must remember to turn around and run to the secret place of our hearts where Christ’s spirit dwells in us. There the intensity of the moment will be defused, and we will be given the grace and power to overcome what is pressing into our soul, to create instability.
“You are hidden in the strength of God Most High. He’s the hope that holds me, and the Stronghold to shelter me”.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand].” Psalm 91:1
