When King David was stuck in the “pit,” he waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord to rescue him in spite of his feelings. His faith triumphed over his feelings! Many times in our humanness, we cannot maintain emotional and spiritual stability when we are down in the pit. The pit feels like a helpless place where our spiritual enemy works to bring damage to our lives. The pit is a negative place full of confusion, chaos, hopelessness, dissatisfaction, and depression. At some point while we are in the pit, we will recognize we need help to get out. Our realization that we need help gives God an opportunity to show us His true, loving nature. He has the desire and power to draw us out and use creative ways that will lead to help and healing. Coming out of the pit is a process that requires us to look at our hearts and work through our losses, real or imagined, and the emotions attached to them. During this process, God becomes our helper as we learn to talk to Him, trust Him, and release our disappointed hearts to Him. Like a loving parent, “Daddy Jesus” will cry and feel the pain with us, enabling us to experience release from the sticky, miry clay that holds us captive. Then we will be able to accept His offer of establishing some stability in our lives, as He gives us the mercy, grace, and power to keep stepping forward.
“I waited patiently and expectantly for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up out of a horrible pit [a pit of tumult and of destruction], out of the miry clay [froth and slime], and set my feet upon a rock, steadying my steps and establishing my goings” (Psalm 40:1-2).
