It is God’s will that we learn to love and accept ourselves and others the way Jesus does. Unfortunately, there are times we get pulled off this positive path of love and wisdom, by comparing ourselves with others. When we access our worth by comparison, even though we have never walked in the person’s shoes we are comparing ourselves to, we become unwise. Nevertheless, many times we continue on and compare our: looks, children, partners, material goods, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses! However the Bible cautions if we partake in the “act of comparing” we will lack in compassionate understanding toward ourselves and others. When we choose to compare ourselves one or two things is going to happen. If we deem ourselves better than or above the one we pick to compare ourselves with we will descend into pride, smugness, arrogance, conceit, or self-importance. On the other end of the comparison spectrum when we think we are not as good as, lacking in or less than others this pulls us down into self-hate, self-loathing, self-pity, sadness and inferiority. We must understand comparing is deadly to our emotional and spiritual advancement. To practically walk in Christ love and be graced with His understanding , tolerance and humility we must put an end to evaluating ourselves and others by the “act of comparing”.
“However, when they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely” (2 Corinthians 10:12b).
