There were times when King David did not want to look at things, but just wished he could fly away to find some rest. When difficult situations seem to surround us, our human nature tells us to run or “fly” away from our circumstances and feelings. The momentary relief we experience while running gives us a false sense of control that keeps us from turning to the Lord for help, healing, and hope. Running away will never create heartfelt or lasting rest. On the other hand, running to the Lord.. facing the truth, looking within, feeling and releasing our hurt, fear, and frustration to Him, listening to His Spirit give direction, and holding on to His promises…. creates true rest that no situation can rob from you. So the next time you are tempted to run away, remember that it won’t help in the long run. Instead, run to the One who can deliver you from your overwhelming fears and bring lasting rest to your soul.
“And I say, oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest” (Psalm 55:6).
