“And I say, oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest” (Psalm 55:6).
There were times when King David did not want to look at the pressures in his life – he just wanted to fly away and find some relief and rest. In times like these, when it feels as if responsibilities, challenges, or trials overtake our ability in life to rest in the Lord – it can be a struggle to stay in touch with our living faith. When long term difficult situations seem to surround us, our human nature may tell us to run or “fly” away from our circumstances and unpleasant feelings to find relief. People run away from life and God in different ways, but the momentary relief experienced while running, usually causes bigger problems in the end. While running, we may have a false sense of control that keeps us from turning to the Lord for help, healing, hope and growth. Running away will only postpone the healing and transforming power the Lord desires to work within us, and running never creates heartfelt or lasting peace and rest.
On the other hand, running to the Lord and facing the truth, looking within, feeling and releasing our hurt, fear, and frustration to Him layer by layer, listening to His Spirit, and holding on to His Logos promises…. creates true rest and spiritual growth that no situation can rob from us. God’s words will never lead you astray, because the declarations of his mouth can be trusted. His words are clear and straightforward to everyone who possesses spiritual understanding. God is able to transform our lives if we will get honest with Him about what is really within our hearts- go against the desire to run away- and cling and trust in Him.
The next time we are tempted to run away- remember that it won’t help in the long run. Instead, run to the One who has the power to deliver you from your overwhelming fears and bring lasting healing and rest to your soul, through an amazing, growing, awe-inspiring relationship with the great I AM! Remember, God’s wisdom is shrewd and intelligent. He has devised a plan for your life, and you will find true success when you run to Him!
