In Bible times, a yoke was a wooden frame by which two oxen were joined at the head or neck in order to work together. Jesus declared that those who were burdened should take His yoke upon them, meaning that they should let Him come close and help carry the load.
As we work through our issues and look to Jesus for help in carrying our burdens, we will discover His true heart, which is gentle and humble, not harsh or arrogant. God is awesome, and when He is doing a work in our lives, He has the ability to take burdens that seem so harsh, sharp, and pressing and turn them into useful, good, comfortable, and pleasant tools that produce spiritual transformation in our lives. It is always God’s will for us to arrive at a peaceful place in our spirit, to find relief, ease, refreshment, and quiet-no matter what the circumstances may be. He has the desire and ability to lighten any burden we carry. Today, turn to Jesus and He will help.
“Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle [meek] and humble [lowly] in heart, and you will find rest [relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet] for your souls, For My yoke is wholesome [useful, good-not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable , gracious, and pleasant], and My burden is light and easy to be borne” (Mathew 11:29-30).
